A Week in the Life... Nov 28

It was Thanksgiving week and OH! What a week it has been!

Due to the excitement and fullness of this week, I may submit more than one picture per day. We have had THAT much fun!!

Monday: I went to lunch with a future wife in the squadron.
She was visiting her fiance for Thanksgiving but he had to go into work during the day.
So we took advantage of the wonderful weather, got to know each other, and watched this cat enjoy a nice meal of leftovers.

Tuesday: Welcome to Okinawa, Mom and Dad!!

Wednesday: We surprised Mom and Dad with an aerial tour of the island!!

Dad loved every minute of his front seat ride in the Cesna.
I loved the views!
More to come on this in the future.

Thursday: HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!
We spent the day with friends from the squadron.
It was a great feast!

Friday: We played the annual Turkey Bowl Powder Puff Football Game.
The Bat Babes of the 44th vs. the Cockettes of the 67th
The Bat Babes were victorious!!
In this picture I'm getting hi fives from the ladies after scoring the first TD!!

Following the powder puff game, the guys played the Annual Turkey Bowl Flag Football Game.
Unfortunately, the Cocks of the 67th won this one.
But Mike provided fierce coverage for the QB.

We had a great time!
Thanks for all the cheers from the sidelines, Mom and Dad!

Saturday: The first opportunity for Mom and Dad to try sushi.
We went to Sushi Zen (one of Mike's favorites).
Mom was practicing eating with chopsticks.

Sunday: Mom, Dad, and I spent the day exploring the northern part of the island.
We went to the Ocean Expo Park where we saw some of the aquarium, went to a botanical gardens, and toured an historical Okinawan village.
In one of the homes, we went in to share a cup of tea while kneeling on a tatami mat.

This was the prefect way to end a great day and an even better week.

A Week in the Life... Nov 22

It's been another great week filled with activities, gatherings, laughter, and friends. Hope you enjoy the pics from this week!!

Monday: We had a book club meeting at Brittany's house.
This month's book: Water for Elephants.
It's a GREAT book!! One of my favs so far!!

Tuesday: We had a squadron coffee.
Wives' coffees are our version of roll call or business meetings.
We all gather, eat, chat, talk a little business about upcoming events.
But we always have fun. This month we played crud at the Officer's Club.
Crud is fighter pilot game played on a huge pool table with 2 balls and no cues.
The specifics of the game will have to be a whole different post!!

Wednesday: I gave a lecture at the Okinawa Physical Therapy School.
This is their first year class.
Again, this will have be a completely separate post because the specifics of the day were awesome and too many to share here.

Thursday: I had a picnic lunch with my friend Kristyn on the seawall.
We sat looking out at the ocean, chatting, and snacking.
It was a great stress reliever.

Friday: I had a job interview!!
It was for a pediatric PT position in the schools on the bases here in Okinawa.
I won't hear for a while but let's hope they hire me!!!

Saturday: I had dinner with a great group of friends at Brittany's house.
Brittany's parents are in town so after eating they told us embarrassing stories about her as a child.
I love it when parents are in town!!

Sunday: Mike came home from a 2 and half week TDY!
He was in northern Japan, a town called Chitose flying the JASDF
(Japanese Air Self-Defense Force).
We call them the JASDaf.
He said it was cold and snowing but he welcomed the change of weather.
Maybe if you pester him, he'll post something about his experience up there!!

My Bat Babe, My Friend

There are many times when I think, "I wouldn't survive life here in Okinawa without my girlfriends." It's completely true! Many of my friends are wives in our squadron. We call ourselves the Bat Babes. These ladies are much more than schedule fillers and bitching buddies. They are my best supporters, my counselors, and my family. Life without them would truly be unimaginable.

Our squadron commander just passed on his leadership. He, his wife, and his family are preparing to move back to The States. As is tradition, the wives had a farewell party for the squadron commander's wife where we all had an opportunity to say something to her or about her as a group. She addressed us as well. Her thoughts were organized in a poem. This poem says everything I have thought about my Bat Babes only better. I thought I'd share it with you so you can appreciate how important my fellow wives and friends are!

My Bat Babe, My Friend
by Katie Farrar

Bat Babe Welcome me, I just left my safe place.
Bat Babe Receive me like you've known me for years.
Take me to the places that I can't go on my own.
Bat Babe Accept me, and remember I am not the same as anyone else.
Bat Babe Need me. I want to feel useful, and there is a place for everyone.
Bat Babe Want me. Dont just need me.
Be my friend.

Bat Babe Show me. I want to see all of these great things through your eyes.
Bat Babe Help me. I can't do this alone.
Save me from the things you have seen but I have not.
Bat Babe Soothe me. Same days are just harder than others.
Comfort me. You know my pain.
Bat Babe Hear me. Today I just need to talk.
Be my friend.

Bat Babe Dance with me. It just makes me happy.
Bat Babe Dine with me. Enough said.
Celebrate with me. You are the first one to hear my news.
Cry with me. Life does not happen without sorrow.
Be joyful for me just because.
Lift me up. You do so much for my spirits.
Bat Babe Hug me. I need to feel loved.
Be my friend.

Bat Babe Name me. I want to know you know me.
Bat Babe Understand me. This takes time and effort.
Support me. You may not always understand me, but you are still be there for me.
Encourage me. This is what keeps me going day after day.
Make me your family. Mine is so far away and now YOU are my family.
Bat Babe Strengthen me. I want to be like you. You are contagious.
Be my friend.

Bat Babe Surprise me. The days become routine, and a girl just likes to be surprised.
Walk with me. Not in my shoes, just next to me.
Grow me and nurture me, the way a flower needs water and sun.
Be truthful to me, but don't judge me.
Forgive me. I am human, and I will fail.
Join me. I've heard there's no better place to be!!
Be my friend.

Bat Babe Love me, even when I am not so lovable.
Bat babe Remember me, but more importantly,
Remember
I LOVE YOU!!
Oh Bat Babe, There's no ONE like you!!
Thank you for being my friend.

These are most of my Bat Babes. (We are missing about 12)
The picture was taken today at the Kadena Marina.

Oh I am so thankful for my Bat Babes!!

A Week In the Life... Nov 15

I guess the theme of this week's post is "While the Guys Are Away, the Girls Will Play!" Our squadron (including Mike) are on a TDY in northern Japan. So since all the husbands are gone, the girls have been getting together more than normal. I am not complaining though. We have had so much fun this week!!

Monday and Tuesday: I spent the whole day in the office finishing an application for a new job. I turned it in on Tuesday night. Rusty was by my side the whole time.
He's a great moral support.

Wednesday mornings I babysit for this beautiful little girl, Kat!
We had some fun with photo time!
She's so happy and easy to watch.

Wednesday night some of my bestest girls came over for wine and whine night.
Rusty tried to get in this picture and sent Andrea's glass of wine flying though air.
I'm glad we had the timer on because it caught this moment beautifully.
From the left: Rusty, me, Brittany, Andrea, and Kristyn

Thursday: Happy Veteran's Day. This is my favorite service man but I am also thankful for all of the men and women who serve our country now and in the past.
(This picture was taken after his first solo flight in the F-15C!)

Friday night Aspen, Shelly, Evan, Kristyn and I had dinner at Chili's.
Yes, folks, it was a large night! Chili's and the high school musical!
Watch out!

Saturday: You guessed it: Girl Night!!
We all went to Kristyn's house for some Dance Party 2 on the Wii!
Pasley in front is joining in with the girls in back:
Tanya, Yelana, and Kristyn
Oh so much fun!!

Sunday: I spent the day at a baby shower for two lovely ladies in the squadron.
This is my gift: printed onesies that say "Bat Baby" and "Made in Japan"
I am really getting into the iron-on transfers!!

A Week In the Life... Nov 8

So a friend of mine told me about a program on Facebook that has you upload one picture everyday for a year. At the end of it all, you have a very well rounded view of your life! I thought this was a great idea and I would modify it for our blog! So every Sunday (or Monday in this case) I will post 7 pictures from our week. There will be pictures of things that we've done, places we've been, or things we've seen. They will most likely be mundane and common but this will also give you a clear picture of our life here in Okinawa!

Monday: This is the middle of our cul-de-sac.
The man cutting the grass is local and hired by the base.
All of the landscaping crew dress like this.
They are lovingly referred to as "lawn ninjas."

Tuesday I got the mail.
Everyone on base has to get their mail at the post office.
There are 4 similar hallways like this one.
Thank you to my loving family for the AWESOME packages!!
You are the best!!

Wednesdays: I volunteer at the therapeutic riding program off base every Wednesday.
The horses and land are owned by a local organic farmer.
The time with them is free.
Children with disabilities and their families come each week to ride.
Thanks to Mr. Toma (the farmer) and volunteers, these children get a little extra help each week!

Thursday: Rusty spent some time in the back yard with his neighbor friends, Barley and Abby!

Friday: Our squadron, the 44th FS, had a Change of Command ceremony.
Lt. Col. "Pfister" Farrar (in the middle) was stepping down and handing command to Lt. Col. "Joker" Carey (to the right of Pfister).
(more on this to come)

I apologize for not having all 7 photos. This is my first week and I didn't have pictures for every day. It's a work in progress. But look for a post each Sunday of photos of our week!!

2 YEARS?!?!

Gosh - Our two year anniversary snuck up on us, and it's flown by just as fast! We celebrated with a weekend at the Marriott on Okinawa. It was a quick but much needed getaway! It was perfect timing too because we had another typhoon roll through that weekend. Good thing the hotel had a spa and a movie channel!!

This was the view from our hotel room.
Friday was beautiful and sunny.
Can you believe we had 40 MPH winds the next day?!

We spent Friday afternoon in the pool at the swim-up bar.

This was the activity in the kiddy pool.
Apparently, the kids step in. The dude pumps the bubble full of air....

And then they gerbil-wheel it on the water.
It was very entertaining!

Later that night we went to a "wester BBQ" place.
I wouldn't call it BBQ, but we did cook our own food on the grill in front of us and it was delicious!

Saturday, we spent the day sleeping in, got massages at the spa,
and watched the storm from our awesome window!
Then Saturday night we went to dinner at one of the restaurants that served Okinawan food.
Here I am eating pickled jelly fish.
The meal also included shark fin soup, shrimp with the head still on, sweet potato rice wrapped in a tea leaf, and awesome sautéed beef!
Japan is an adventure and I'm taking full advantage!

We finished the night with a bottle of champagne and more conversation.

It was so much fun celebrating our two years of marriage with two nights in paradise. Reflecting on our 2 years, we have had a crazy time, seen great sights, and made a lot of memories. In 2 years we've live in 3 houses, 2 states, and 2 countries. Mike has flown 3 different planes. I have had 3 different jobs. We have gotten a dog and watched him grow to 80 pounds! We have made many friends all of which we are so grateful for. There have had ups and downs, challenges and blessings. But through it all, we have learned even more about each other. We have grown closer. And I love Mike more today than I did the day I married him. I didn't know that was possible.

Thank you for two fantastic years, Mike!! I look forward to many, many more years of happiness and growth! I hope you know that today and everyday,
I choose you!

Congratulations to Ann Marie and Joel

I feel like I've been to my fair share of weddings and all have been special and unique in their own way. My favorite weddings, though, are ones that clearly reflect the personality of the couple and this wedding was certainly one of those. It was also special for me because it was an opportunity to see some friends that I don't often get to see.

The bride, Ann Marie Grimberg, was a roommate of mine in Portland, OR in 2003-2004. We were participating in a volunteer program called Holy Cross Associates along with 4 other wonderful people, Mike McGarry, Whitney Thompson, Mary Kay McDermott, and Marcel Lanahan. The six of us vowed to live the year dedicated to service, spirituality, community, and poverty. We each volunteered at various non-profit organizations during the day and worked as a community to explore and improve in the other areas at night and on the weekends. It was one of the most difficult, life changing, and phenomenal years of my life. Needless today say, the bonds formed with these six people are unlike any other in my life. After our year in Portland, we went our separate ways and are still following our own paths and passions as best we can. We don't see each other much, but when we do it is always a special occasion! Thanks to Ann Marie, we had another excuse to celebrate!

The lovely bride and groom.

Ann Marie married her handsome best friend Joel Moyer on August 7th, 2010 in Cleveland, Ohio. Hints of Ann Marie and Joel's personality seeped out of every detail of the day. The ceremony was held at a beautiful Catholic church in the city. Ann Marie and Joel stood out front to welcome their guests to the celebration. The church was filled with beautiful music performed by friends of the couple: Mary Kay was a vocalist, Marcel played guitar, and two other friends played the piano and bongo drums. The procession included their entire immediate family including siblings, in-laws, nieces and nephews. Both Ann Marie and Joel were escorted by their parents to the alter.

Mary Kay and Marcel dazzled us with their musical talents.

They started the ceremony by addressing the congregation together as bride and groom. They thanked everyone for being there to witness their vows and the sacrament of marriage. They acknowledged that every person in that church had been a part of their lives and had influenced them in one way or another and then went on ask that we continue to be a part of their lives as husband and wife.

Their welcome speech was both touching and personal.
What a great idea!

The music and readings all spoke of serving others, social justice and peace. The homily was touching and appropriate. Their siblings gave the final blessing that they wrote themselves. Ann Marie's dress was classy and elegant yet simple. Her bouquet was wild flowers tied with a bow. She even high fived her husband on the alter after the first kiss!! All of these things scream Ann Marie!! You could feel her love for Joel and their dedication to social justice and simple living coming through in every last detail.

The reception only enhanced these feelings. Her uncles own the Great Lakes Brewing Company and supplied the bar with their own personalized beer. Ann Marie and Joel mingled with guests and expressed their appreciation through cocktail hour. After being introduced and the speeches were made by their sisters and witnesses, Joel played a surprise picture slide show that he had organized himself. He had represented every special group in her life. And then they danced. Their song was upbeat and happy. That continued on into the night as family and friends joined them on the dance floor. We even got a little dedication to the Portland House with Murder on the Dance Floor by Kylie Minogue (a house favorite). The night was perfect!

Mike and I were equally impressed with the NuptiAle!
The description of the brew described both of them as if they were a beer.
So cute!

Thomas, Whitney and Pete's little boy was taking advantage of little outside time during the cocktail hour.

Marcel, Mike, Whitney and her hubby Pete enjoyed the weather and each other's company.

Don't they make a great couple?

Half-way through their first dance, the kids in the crowd decided to join them on the dance floor.
They were surrounded by a ring of skipping children for the remainder of their song.
This this a sign for life to come?!?!

The rest of the night was enjoyed by all.
Ann Marie and one of her famous dance moves... singing into the ole' thumb microphone.
Classic!

After the celebrating, visiting, and well wishing had ended, the rest of the housemates and mates went back to stay with Whitney, her husband Pete, and her lovely little boy Thomas. We had some extra time to catch up with each other and share stories of our current lives. I am sad that I don't talk to the five of them very often, but when I think of them, I am always thankful that they have been and are still in my life.

I had to include a quick pic of Thomas.

Look at the baby blues on this boy! Adorable!!

The HCA PDX '03-'04 crew is back together again!
From left: Whitney's Thomas and Pete, Me, Ann Marie and her Joel, Mary Kay and her Peter (green shirt), Whitney, Marcel and Mike.

Thank you, Ann Marie and Joel, for sharing your weekend with me! Thank you for bringing the house together again. I can't wait for our next excuse to visit, celebrate, and share together!!
